Thanks to a huge supply of food (a type of shrimp) the lake (of approx. 65 km2) supports a massive stock of rainbow-trout. The average weight is a healthy 10 lb and the biggest fish weigh in on 25-30 lb!The Jurassic lake lodge has got the best beats of the lake (about 10 km), the outflow of Rio Barrancoso and 25 km of the stream. When conditions are right the fishing in the Barrancoso can be spectacular with big fish being caught on light tackle and small nymphs. During the whole season, large schools of fish will congregate to the outflow and nearby bays to get to their spawning grounds. The new fish is often all silver and known for their strength and acrobatics.
Going to Jurassic Lake was earlier a struggle with a long drive on bad roads for 6-8 hours in 4x4 jeeps. Since 2017 the lodge has an airstrip constructed only 20 minutes drive away. As a guest you fly from your international destination to Buenos Aires and on to the town of Comodoro Rivaldavia (about 2 hours domestic flight). From there it takes your private charter (19 seater Twin Otter) around 1 hour 15 minutes to reach Jurassic Lake. Overnight at hotel in Comodoro on arrival is often needed.
Itinerary from Saturday – Saturday including travel and fishing as follows:
Day 0: Arrival Friday afternoon to Comodoro and overnight at hotel.
Day 1: Morning transfer to airport, charter flight to Jurassic lake lodge. Installation, information and half day fishing.
Day 2-7: Full fishing days with guide. 09.00-12.30 – 16.00-20.30
Day 8: Morning transfer to airstrip, charter flight to Comodoro. Departure domestic flight to Buenos Aires and international flight.
Jurassic Lake Lodge used to be a pretty basic camp but during recent years investments has been made to meet international anglers demand. New for the 2018 season are double rooms with good comfort including WC/shower and hot/cold water. The main dining room has got a nice panoramic view over the lake and offers TV, WIFI and electric power. A selection of spirits, beer and domestic wine is on offer free for the anglers during the week. The lodge has got a competent chef and offers traditional Patagonian dishes with International cuisine in three course meals.
Many fishing days on the lake will be windy… WERY WINDY! As an angler here you will need to accept it and work the line low with a lot of double haul technique. The outlet of the little creek, Barrancoso, is undoubtedly one of the best spots to fish, at times the fishing can be amazing. The different groups (you will fish two and two) will be rotated during the week giving everyone the same chance to a productive fishing. The nearby bay ”of pigs” will at times be very productive for giant fish (hence the name). Expect a tricky cast in to the wind and huge fish taking the fly on short line. If the water level in the Barrancoso river is ok you can be driven in 4x4 upstream from the lodge and hike (and fish..) your way down (4-5 hours). A fantastic experience!
Rods in #7-8 and 9 ft and floating or intermediate line will work fine in the lake. If you have a shorter switch rod in # 7-8 you might bring that to. For days with low wind and the technical fishing in the Rio Barrancoso a rod in #6-4 and a floating line is preferred. Medium sized reels with at least 150 m 20 lb backing is needed. Tippets from 0.18 – 0,35 mm. High waders with good boots, warm underwear, a warm hat and fishing gloves is recommended due to the wind and cold weather.
Flies that work well are: Steamers / Wolly Buggers in olive, black and brown with some flash. Tied on a strong hook in size 4-6. Matuka style flies with rabbits strips/ leech flies in black, purple and olive size 4. Small nymphs like Princess nymph in size 12-16. Worm fly in red (different weights) in size 12-16. Mouse imitation in size 2. Larger foam flies (Chernobyl Ant) in size 4-8. Special fly: Balanced Wolly-bugger in olive and size 4-6, tied on a extended jig hook and fished drifting with an indicator.
